The acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a fruit that comes from the Brazilian acai palm and makes a great smoothie base. It is known as a superfood because it is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. Acai has a slightly earthy flavor with a tart berry flavor and some say a hint of chocolate.

Acai bowls are a type of smoothie bowl – in this version, I add a banana, milk or juice, and a little yogurt. To serve these acai bowls, add delicious toppings like nuts, granola, or chopped fresh fruit.

Acai – To get that deep purple color, use frozen acai puree (pictured top left) or acai powder (top right). You can find packets of acai in the freezer section of almost any grocery store. This is often done with frozen fruit or with organic or health foods.

liquid – I often use apple juice, but any fruit juice or any type of milk like coconut milk or almond milk.

Yogurt – Use plain or flavored yogurt, any kind will do.

fruit – I added banana for sweetness and berries for flavor, although almost any fruit looks great in this bowl.
