A classic Tuna salad The recipe is an easy lunch and can be made ahead of time for meals throughout the week.

This recipe combines flaky canned tuna with celery, onion, dill pickles, and mayonnaise. I sometimes sneak potato chips in my sandwich…anyone else?!

Ingredients for Tuna Salad

This tuna salad recipe is simple, but of course, you can jazz it up however you want!

Tuna – I prefer albacore tuna filleted in water because it's lighter, but oily fillets work just as well. Canned salmon also works in this recipe.

Dressing – The mayonnaise-based dressing in this tuna salad is simple. Lemon juice and a bit of Dijon mustard are added for some tang.

Add-Ins – Chopped celery, chopped dill pickles (or sweet relish if you prefer), and chopped green onions add flavor and crunch. Dill pickle can be replaced with sweet pickle relish.

Variations – Replace the mix-in with fresh herbs (such as flat-leaf parsley or dill), chopped red bell pepper or red onion, or even a chopped hard-boiled egg. Add a pinch of your favorite spice mix if you like!

How to make Tuna Salad

Tuna salad is very easy and requires very little preparation.

  1. Groove flaked tuna and place in a medium bowl. Use a fork to gently pull apart the pieces.
  2. Add mix-ins. As directed below.
  3. Gently fold in the mayo and seasonings, and enjoy!

I like to serve a tuna salad sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat bread or a dark bread like rye. It's delicious on a croissant as well as a crab salad!

Lighten it up a bit.

If you want to cut some calories, replace some of the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt. It will taste a bit more complex but still just as delicious!

Making suggestions

We love how easy it is to add tuna to recipes like tuna casseroles, but did you know there are tons of great ways to recreate tuna salad?

  • Stir into pasta to make tuna macaroni salad.
  • Cut the carbs and make it a lettuce wrap! Stuff the lettuce leaves with the mixture or simply place on top of a bed of romaine lettuce.
  • Spoon onto crackers with cheese or wrap with tuna salad and fresh vegetables.

How long does tuna salad last?

Tuna fish salad will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 days if not eaten first because it is so good. Since it contains fish and mayonnaise, be careful not to leave it on the counter too long.

Make tuna fish sandwiches and put the tuna salad back in the fridge in an airtight container to keep it as fresh as possible.
