pea – Frozen peas are the best option. They are sweet, tender, and do not require cooking. To make a creamy pea salad with garden-fresh peas, shell the peas and blanch them in a pot of boiling water for 5-8 minutes or until tender. Drain well and cool completely.

Add-ins – We love crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and red onion. You can add chopped boiled eggs if you want.

  • Use real bacon bits instead of cooked and crumbled bacon.
  • We like sharp cheddar cheese best in this pea salad recipe, but you can substitute your favorite cheese.
  • Red onion can be replaced with green onion or sweet white onion.

Dressing – This pea salad dressing is both tangy and creamy and only takes a few minutes to prepare. A little mayo is mixed with sour cream, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Simple but perfect.

  • For a lighter dressing, replace the sour cream with Greek yogurt.
  • The dressing in the recipe is best, but you can also use ranch dressing if you prefer.

Frozen vegetables are blanched before freezing (in other words, partially cooked and quickly cooled.) This prevents the cell walls from bursting and turning the vegetables into a mush.

To make sweet pea salad, buy frozen baby peas, sometimes called baby peas or baby sweet peas. They are high in sugar and make a nice addition to the saltiness of the bacon.
